Diabetic Foot Care

Hampton Roads and Suffolk, Virginia (VA), in particular, has a robust diabetic population that we are privileged to serve. Diabetic foot complications are the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the United States and are the most common cause of hospitalization for people with diabetes.

This is truly unfortunate, as 85% of amputations can be prevented. How, you ask?

1Foot 2Foot has developed a comprehensive program that will keep you out of the hospital and in comfortable shoes with all of your toes intact! The Suffolk Limb Amputation Prevention (SLAP) program is our initiative to ensure Hampton Roads is below the national amputation average. Research has shown that a single visit to a podiatrist can reduce your risk of amputation by 29%.

The amputation rate for those in our SLAP program who have not had a prior ulcer or amputation is less than 1%.

SLAP programOur process is simple yet complete. You come in for an initial SLAP assessment. We perform a history and examination to determine your risk for developing an ulcer — an open sore that can lead to amputation. We educate you based on your current SLAP risk and create a treatment/prevention program for you to follow. Some people only need to be seen once a year, whereas others might need to come every few months and some, unfortunately, more often than that if problems arise.

1Foot 2Foot foot doctors in Suffolk, North Suffolk, Hampton, and Virginia Beach, VA, communicate with your primary care physician and have quick access to the hospital in case you have any complications. We are well versed in the management of diabetic foot complications, so should you find yourself at the hospital, we can assure you that you’re in good hands.

As a leading provider of diabetic shoes and therapeutic shoes in Suffolk, VA, we are experienced at fitting shoes and molding inserts to accommodate your feet, which can dramatically reduce your risk of foot complications. Often, these shoes and inserts are covered by your insurance with little to no out-of-pocket expense. Insurance carriers know the importance of appropriate shoes to prevent the more expensive complications that can result without the shoes.

Diabetic Wounds And Related Reconstruction

For people with diabetes, seeking immediate treatment for sores on your feet can greatly diminish the chance of infection – and potential amputation. Suffolk foot doctor Dr. Dairman has undergone additional training in the areas of diabetic foot and ankle wounds and their related reconstruction, having spent two years during his residency rotating through Denver’s Diabetic Foot and Wound Center. His treatments were designed to emphasize limb salvage, reconstruction, and the overall prevention of diabetic-related disorders. He is a member of the American Professional Wound Care Association and is the only physician who is Suffolk Board Certified in Wound Care.
