What You Need to Know

Here is how MLS Laser Therapy works and what conditions it can help treat.

Understanding MLS Laser Therapy

When you think of pain relief, you think of something that will work without causing more pain. MLS Laser is one treatment that fits the bill. It is a pain laser that is, in fact, painless. This laser uses light energy and converts it to biomechanical energy by stimulating your body’s healing mechanisms at the cellular level, enhancing your body’s naturally occurring cellular turnover to fight pain and inflammation.

MLS stands for Multiwave Lock System, a technology that delivers light in two distinct wavelengths, 808 nanometers and 905 nanometers. The lower wavelength concentrates on reducing inflammation and edema, while the higher wavelength focuses on pain reduction. The combination produces greater pain relief because the two wavelengths affect different pathways. The dual action low energy laser light targets the mitochondria, the power houses of the cells that create energy rich molecules and promote healing.

MLS Laser works on all types of pain. Whether you have an acute injury such as a sprain, strain, or stress fracture, or chronic pain from arthritis, neuropathy, or post-operative recovery, MLS Laser therapy is worth considering. Conditions such as plantar fasciitis, chronic heel pain, Achilles tendinitis, and sports injuries respond well because the laser decreases edema, commonly known as swelling. It can also be used on non-infected wounds to help them heal faster with less scarring.

If you are living with foot or ankle pain that has not resolved with rest or conservative care, schedule a consultation with 1Foot 2Foot to find out whether MLS Laser Therapy is right for you.

What to Expect During Treatment

When you are considering MLS Laser therapy, the doctor will consult with you to determine the right course of treatment. There are some contraindications, and we want to make sure this is right for you. Women who are pregnant and children are two contraindications, though there are a few others as well. For your first treatment, you come into the treatment room, sign our consent, watch a quick introductory video, and have your questions answered. You will be required to wear our protective eyeglasses at all times during the treatment.

Since there is no pain, our patients find this very relaxing. They are able to calmly recline while their pain is being treated. The average treatment takes between 10 and 30 minutes. The light does not focus on any one area for more than a few seconds, just enough time to stimulate the cells and enhance healing without any thermal damage.

Treatment frequency depends on whether your condition is chronic, acute, or post-operative. Most acute injuries respond well with 6 sessions, 2 to 3 times a week for 2 to 3 weeks. For chronic conditions, the recommended total is 12 sessions, 2 to 3 times a week over 4 to 6 weeks, with an optional maintenance program afterward. For neuropathy, 12 treatments over 4 to 6 weeks provide relief, followed by monthly sessions to continue reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow.
